Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

As part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup I spent a morning cleaning up a 1 km stretch of beach in Hamilton, Ontario with my colleagues. The morning started off overcast but it soon cleared and the temperature climbed to a beautiful 25degreesC. I may have gotten a little sunburn on my nose. We were told there was not a lot of garbage on the beach, but my group of four managed to collect about 20 pounds of garbage and about 10 pounds of recyclables. I was astounded by the number of plastic bottle caps (425), straws (104) and plastic cutlery (69) our small group found. There is no need for this type of waste folks, no need at all.

My team even made the local paper – I’m the one bending down to pick up yet another endless plastic bottle cap.
